Automated broiler phenotyping using smart technologies to improve health, welfare and performance; TKI Agri&Food

Todays’ developments in new technologies provide increased possibilities for using sensor and computer vision approaches to phenotype these (novel) traits on individual animals in a breeding program. Broiler breeding programs aim to improve the health and welfare of broilers in production systems. The individual phenotypic records for these programs are still generally based on manual or visual observations. However, these observations can be time-consuming and subjective, especially for novel traits reflecting leg health and activity of birds, hampering fast genetic progress.Overall, this project will contribute to objective phenotypic scoring throughout life and can subsequently contribute to faster genetic progress and improved broiler health, welfare and performance. Participating partners of Breed4Food are Cobb and Wageningen University & Research.
